AMSET Schedule of 2018 Events

The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) hosts numerous fundraisers and educational programs a year, along with rotating quarterly exhibitions.  AMSET has selections from the permanent collection on view year-round in the Lecture Hall and West Hall with local artists showcasing works in the Café Arts

AMSET is located at 500 Main Street in downtown Beaumont and regular hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (409) 832-3432 or visit www.amset.org.

Ellen Tanner: Fables, Families and Myths Winter Exhibition – December 16, 2017-March 4, 2018.  This exhibition features recent work from the artist’s three series: Aesop’s Fables, Love and Loss Families, and Greek Myths.  Tanner is represented by Moody Gallery in Houston, Texas.

The John Gaston Fairey Collection of Mexican Folk Art: An Introduction Winter Exhibition – December 16, 2017-March 4, 2018.  A selection of artwork recently donated by John Gaston Fairey to AMSET’s permanent collection in memory of his parents, Philip and Isabel Fairey is on view in the Steinhagen Gallery.

Café Arts Series Sirena LaBurn: Endless, Texas – On view now until January 14, 2018

Café Arts Series Courtni Meadows: Rock On – January 18-March 18, 2018. Opening Reception: 1-3 p.m. Sunday January 21, 2018.

AMSET’s 2nd Annual Mardi pARTy – Friday, February 2, 2018.  This fundraiser will feature music, dancing, Cajun cuisine by Katharine & Company, live/silent auctions, a professional face painter, and more. All proceeds benefit AMSET educational programming and exhibitions.

Winter Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018. A day of family fun with entertainment, face painting, and art activities that will correlate with Ellen Tanner: Fables, Families and Myths and The John Gaston Fairey Collection of Mexican Folk Art: An Introduction. This event is free and open to the public.

Protégé 32nd Annual High School Art Competition and Exhibition – Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony – 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 22, 2018.  This year’s juror is Ellen Tanner.  Protégé exhibition on view at AMSET – February 22 through March 25, 2018. AMSET believes it is important that young artists have an early opportunity to enter art competitions and to learn professional exhibition protocol.

21st Annual Go for the Gold Party and Reverse Drawing – 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 8, 2018.  Tickets are $100 and include admission, dinner and cocktails for two, along with one entry into the most exciting drawing in town. Three ticket holders get a chance to win prizes in gold. The holder of the last ticket drawn from the hopper will receive $10,000 in gold. Proceeds from Go for the Gold benefit the museum’s exhibitions and educational programming.

Shaun Roberts: Rebels and Renegades Spring Exhibition – On view March 17-June 3, 2018.  The opening reception is 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 and will feature a gallery talk by Artist Shaun Roberts and include complimentary appetizers and beverages. Admission is free and open to the public.

Anthony Sonnenberg: Set and Stage Spring Exhibition – On view March 17-June 3, 2018.  The opening reception is 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 and will feature a performance by Artist Anthony Sonnenberg and actors in drag.  Complimentary appetizers and beverages are provided. Admission is free and open to the public.

Café Arts Series Wayne Goodman – March 22 through May 13, 2018

Spring Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, May 19, 2018.  This FREE day of family fun will give children and their families an opportunity to participate in several hands on art activities that correlate with AMSET’s current exhibitions, Shaun Roberts: Rebels and Renegades and Anthony Sonnenberg: Set and Stage.  Entertainment, face painting, and refreshments will be provided.

Summer ArtVentures Creative Kids Camp – June 18 through July 28, 2018.  At AMSET’s popular summer camp, children ages 5-14 can participate in intensive art education classes taught by professional artists. Selections from the Permanent Collection – June 16-September 2, 2018.  Opening Reception: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, June 15, 2018.  Recent acquisitions will be highlighted from AMSET’s growing permanent collection.

Summer Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, August 11, 2018.  This free event will have entertainment, face painting, refreshments, and unique art activities inspired by AMSET’s recent acquisitions that will be on view in the main galleries.

Anniversary Gala 2018  6:30 p.m., Friday, September 7, 2018.  AMSET’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the anniversary gala includes live entertainment, dancing, fine dining, live/silent auctions, and more. All proceeds benefit the museum’s exhibitions and education programming.

Vincent Valdez Fall Exhibition – On view September 22-November 25, 2018.  The opening reception is 6-8 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2018 and will feature a gallery talk by Artist Vincent Valdez and include complimentary appetizers and beverages. Admission is free and open to the public.

Deborah Luster Fall Exhibition – On view September 22-November 25, 2018. The opening reception is 6-8 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2018 and will include a gallery talk by Artist Deborah Luster with complimentary appetizers and beverages. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Monster Mash: AMSET Bash – 7-11 p.m., Friday, October 19, 2018.  This costume party will once again transform the art museum into a haunted house with live entertainment, treats, and seasonal brews. All proceeds benefit the museum’s exhibitions and education programming.

“Eat a Bug!” Family Arts Day – 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, October 27, 2018.  “Eat a Bug!” Family Arts Day is one of AMSET’s most popular events, where children and their families are tempted to eat fried crickets.  Hands-on art activities focus on the many cultures of our region and the main gallery exhibitions.  Visitors will learn about the current exhibits on view through hands-on art activities as well as Day of the Dead and Latin American crafts such as decorated sugar skulls. Entertainment includes Latin American music and dancing. Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. The event is free and open to the public.

Gingerbread House Workshop – 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018.  Families and children delight in this annual sugary workshop at AMSET. Just in time for the Christmas holidays, this sweet day of family fun allows participants to create a gingerbread house masterpiece.

Holiday Tree Lighting – 4 p.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday, December 6, 2018.  AMSET and area museums, attractions and local businesses will host the annual Holiday Tree Lighting. Families and children are invited to participate in art activities, pictures with Santa, mailing letters to the North Pole, and the lighting of the tree at 6 p.m. sharp.
